Turning the Seiko SRPE into the Ultimate Everyday Dress Watch

The Seiko 5 Sports SRPE series (often nicknamed the "DressKX") is already one of the most versatile, budget-friendly mechanical watches available. Out of the box, it offers a solid automatic movement, a clean case profile, and great wrist presence. But with a few intentional modifications, you can elevate it from an entry-level sports watch into a refined, high-end daily dress watch.

In this build, I teamed up with NamokiMods to swap out the key components and completely transform its personality.

Watch the complete step-by-step build as we transform an everyday Seiko 5 SRPE into a refined dress watch using NamokiMods parts.

Here’s the breakdown of the parts used, the tools needed, and the modification process.

The Mod Parts & Tools

  • Base watch: Seiko 5 Sports SRPE (4R36 movement)

  • Aftermarket parts (NamokiMods): Custom dress dial, polished handset, fluted or slim pilot bezel, and a flat/double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.

  • Tools: Crystal press, case back wrench, hand levers and hand press tool, movement cushion, dust blower, and Rodico.

Step 1: Deconstruction & Movement Removal

  1. Unscrew the exhibition case back and release the crown stem using the release lever.

  2. Carefully drop out the 4R36 movement onto a clean movement cushion.

  3. Protect the dial surface with plastic film before using hand levers to remove the factory hands safely without scratching.

Step 2: Swapping the Dial & Hands

  1. Gently ease off the stock Seiko dial and align the new NamokiMods dress dial onto the movement feet.

  2. Advance the movement until the day/date flips over midnight to find true 12:00.

  3. Press the new hour hand precisely at 12:00, followed by the minute hand and second hand, verifying clearance between each hand so they don't catch.

Step 3: Crystal Press & Reassembly

  1. Pop out the factory Hardlex crystal using a crystal press.

  2. Seat the new sapphire crystal evenly into the case gasket to ensure water resistance and clean alignment.

  3. Use a dust blower and Rodico to clear any microscopic debris from inside the case and the crystal underside.

  4. Reinstall the movement, engage the crown stem, and torque down the case back.

The Final Result

The transformation is night and day. Swapping out the tool-watch dial and flat crystal for clean, high-contrast parts gives the SRPE a tailored, luxury feel while keeping the reliable Seiko automatic engine inside.
