[REVIEW] Stitching iron set by Buckleguy & Corther leather

Starting out in leathercraft, if you have a piece of wood you have a mallet, if you have a box cutter then you have a knife, if you have sandpaper you have an edge beveler… but nothing compares to a good set of stitching chisels!

Today we’re looking at the Stitching Irons made in collaboration by BubkleGuy and Corter Leather.

Why are stitching irons the first upgrade you should make?

Simply put: it’s the only tool for which an upgrade in quality means a direct upgrade in the final finish.

A better, more expensive hammer/knife/skiver/edger/[insert whatever tool you want here] may greatly improve your crafting experience, but all of these can be substituted for cheaper alternatives with little to no impact to the final result.

When starting out in the craft, stitching irons (or stitching chisels) are one tool you will not have a substitute for lying around at the bottom of your toolbox and you’ll have to purchase a set. But poor quality stitching chisels could however leave mark on the leather, make your stitching holes too wide, give them a weird shape that doesn’t close up well while stitching, be tough to punch through and get out of the leather… or simply break as I’ve seen so many do!

This is why, once you’ve invested in good leather, I recommend to all newcomers who are ready to invest to first get themselves a good set of stitching irons. An boy you are in luck as there are so many great options to chose from today!

Stitching iron set by Buckleguy & Corther Leather - Final thoughts

Each iron comes individually packed in its own light cardboard packet and is held safely in place thanks to a clever card cutout. The graphic design on this is very fun and light-hearted while providing all the information you may need about the chisels. This really impressed me and shows how much Corter Leather and BuckleGuy worked on all the smallest details when creating this tool.

Once out of the box the chisels feel very well built with a scratch resistant finish on most of the tool helping to keep it alive and kicking for as long as possible. The teeth, which are perfectly polished and sharp (trust me, I learnt this the hard way), slowly taper down to a nice diamond point.

Punching through leather all the way to the top of the teeth was a breeze and pulling them out again just as simple. Despite going through 4 layers of vegetable tanned leather (nearly 6mm thick + glue), punching the holes was an easy business and a very pleasant experience overall.

Takeaway

If you’re starting out in leathercraft, looking to upgrade your stitching chisels or need another sizing for your stitching, then the stitching chisels by Corter Leather and Buckleguy will definitely fit the bill.

For the price, you’re getting a tool that, if taken care of, should last you a very long time!
